Living Wage - Houston, TX
Saturday, October 28th, 2006The video clip below discusses what the living wage should be for someone in the service industry - more specifically, janitors in Houston, TX who clean multi-million dollar office buildings for corporate America. Janitors in Houston make less than janitors in any other big city in the United States. This seems so contradictory to someone, like me, who connects Houston with big oil money. The minimum wage in Houston is $5.15/hour. In many other parts of the country, cities have voted to raise minimum wage. However, in Houston, the minimum wage has stayed stagnant for many years. The wage makes is impossible for people to support their families, purchase health care on their own, take a sick day, a vacation, a day off for a child’s field trip, etc. The janitors have begun to organize to lobby for a higher living wage, health benefits, etc. This is reminiscent of a bygone era and gives hope for labor conditions in the future. Check it out.
