Living Wage - Houston, TX

Saturday, October 28th, 2006

The video clip below discusses what the living wage should be for someone in the service industry - more specifically, janitors in Houston, TX who clean multi-million dollar office buildings for corporate America. Janitors in Houston make less than janitors in any other big city in the United States. This seems so contradictory to someone, like me, who connects Houston with big oil money. The minimum wage in Houston is $5.15/hour. In many other parts of the country, cities have voted to raise minimum wage. However, in Houston, the minimum wage has stayed stagnant for many years. The wage makes is impossible for people to support their families, purchase health care on their own, take a sick day, a vacation, a day off for a child’s field trip, etc. The janitors have begun to organize to lobby for a higher living wage, health benefits, etc. This is reminiscent of a bygone era and gives hope for labor conditions in the future. Check it out.

New Mac Ad - Counselor

Monday, October 16th, 2006

Today I quickly went to CNN.com to check out the political climate. I also found a very funny new Mac ad. It was the first time I used by speakers at work. Yes, this is how life is for those of us without a television - new Mac ads online are an exciting event. See below:

I love how this ad is playing on today’s society. While other societies in the world may not recognize the banter of a weekly counseling session, Americans recognize the situation immediately. Once again, Mac is using clever advertising to make a humourous situation that Americans will identify with. Mac advertising is so smart.

Lucy

I was watching videos on Current.tv and found this short piece on Lucy, a bartender in New York City. Lucy is a hardworking Polish immigrant. Her story makes me want to go get a drink at her bar and give her a huge tip. Enjoy.
